“What is Museum Day?” by S.M. O’Connor

Museum Day is an annual one-day event, hosted by Smithsonian Magazine, in which participating museums and other cultural institutions across the U.S.A. provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket.  Participants are allowed to download one ticket per e-mail address.  The ticket provides free general admission on Saturday, September 22, 2018 for two people. Note you are only allowed to download one ticket to one museum on Museum Day.

There is a dedicated Facebook Page for Museum Day: https://www.facebook.com/MuseumDay/.  On social media, use the hashtags @MuseumDay or #MuseumDay.  Smithsonian is also encouraging people to use the hashtag #WomenMakingHistory.

To get a ticket for 2018 Museum Day, go to https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/museum-day-2018/.  Then click on the ticket on the purple banner that reads “GET A TICKET.”  If you want to check to see if a museum you would like to visit is participating in Museum Day, or you already know that museum is participating and want to skip a step, type the name of the museum (or other cultural institution) in the window next to the purple rectangle that reads “FIND MUSEUM” near the top of the museum.  Otherwise, do one of four things in the vertical bar on the left of the screen, (1) click on the purple rectangle labeled “NEAR MY LOCATION,” or (2) type your zip code in the window under the label “AROUND ZIP,” or (3) check off a state, or (4) check off one of the eight categories of participating museums and other cultural institutions.  When you find an institution you would like to visit on Museum Day, click on the purple rectangle labeled “GET A TICKET” under that institution.  On the next screen, fill out your e-mail address and name, and then click the purple rectangle that reads “GENERATE TICKET.”  Once you click “GENERATE TICKET,” you will not be able to change your museum selection.
