“Public Votes on Name for Tawny Frogmouth at Brookfield Zoo,” by S.M. O’Connor

The Chicago Zoological Society asked the public to vote between one of three names for the tawny frogmouth chick hatched at the Brookfield Zoo in west suburban Brookfield, Illinois: Beaker, Kermit, and Irwin.  After 2,300 votes were cast, he is named Beaker.   Young Beaker is training to become an animal ambassador.

From the second season onward on The Muppet Show (1976-1981) and in The Muppet Movie (1979), Beaker was the lab assistant to Dr. Bunsen Honeydew.  Most of the time, he only said, “Meep.”
